ABOUT

Intro

My painting of Keir Starmer with David Lammy, Shadow Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of United Kingdom.

I know first hand how much of a difference community and public services can make to individuals’ lives. It is for this reason I will, as your councillor, ensure that a variety of public and community programmes are available to all, and  especially to those who are vulnerable and in need.

I believe in the power of people coming together to create positive change which is why I am standing under Labour to be a local councillor in Childs Hill. I want to help make a difference in people’s lives, just as others had made a difference in mine.

Early Childhood

I was born and raised in Barnet, and have lived here my entire life. I have deep rooted ties to the Child’s Hill ward in particular, as I spent a lot of my early childhood with my grandfather in Golders Green. My late grandfather was a Holocaust survivor, and served in the British Army after immigrating to Britain, as he believed in giving back to the country which had offered him a place of refuge.

As a child I was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome, which is a form of Autism. As a result of my Asperger’s, I found it difficult to communicate with others and form social connections with my peers in school. I needed a lot of support both from my school and from child mental health services to learn the skills necessary to function in a world that I found, at best, hostile and confusing.

Later, in my early teens, I had to be placed in foster care due to family issues at home. I found the changes to be overwhelming at first. My foster carer, however, showed real compassion towards me and was always reassuring. She especially showed real understanding of my communication difficulties. Over time I learned to overcome my difficulties and began to understand more about the world I lived in.

Getting support for my Asperger’s, both from the community, and then later receiving care from my foster carer made me realise how much of a difference communities can make to those who are vulnerable and in need. The support I had been given changed my life for the better, and because of this, I wanted to give back to society and help others, just as others had helped me.

Art

As a child, I experienced late speech development, for which I was offered art therapy in order to help me express myself and communicate with others. This early encounter with art grew into a hobby and a long lived passion of mine, and I continue to paint to this day. My struggles from early in life later motivated me to produce works of art to help inspire and empower others who, like myself, had found that they were often misunderstood by society.

This passion grew into a professional hobby, and today, much of my artwork has been sold at charity auctions to raise money for various causes. One of these charities is Norwood, a charity that had in fact helped me as a child, and which provides services and support generally for children and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism. I have also won awards for my artwork, and some of my paintings have even been displayed in various exhibitions both in the UK and in Europe.

Community Work

Police cadets, I am positioned on the left. The tallest member.

In addition to my charity work, I decided to join the police cadets where I learned first hand about some of the most important issues facing the local community. I loved my time there, and knowing that I was actively contributing to keeping the local community safe, even if in a small way, gave me a sense of achievement.

Present

Fast forward to today, I am a qualified accountant. In addition, I also have qualifications in horticulture, and previous experience working in the field of environmental conservation. I continue to do community and charity work on a regular basis. Furthermore, I take on casework where I represent members of the local community in dealing with various issues ranging from tenants not getting water in their homes to helping disabled residents gain parking access.
